Clinical Aromatherapy

Veronica Sibley MIFPA

Veronica Sibley

In 1987 I owned my own herbal retail shop in the lovely area of Lytham St Anne’s Lancashire. It was a beautiful old fashioned shop selling all types of complementary medicines. I remember buying my first batch of essential oils from my supplier, they smelt good and looked attractive but I did not know exactly what they were used for, so I asked for advice and was told ‘they smell nice’. So there was I, living in the north of England in the late 1980’s where people did not understand the meaning of essential oils and neither did I. To be told they smell nice was not enough for me, I needed to know more, so I hunted out every book I could find on essential oils which were not many in those days and read all that I could.

Robert Tisserand was visiting Manchester around 1988 giving a seminar on Aromatherapy and Massage; I went along not knowing that this would change my life forever. That weekend was magical; I was given ideas on the uses for oils and also allowed to try massage for the first time. I became another woman, the need in me to find out more about aromatherapy just grew, and so I trained with Shirley Price and qualified as an Aromatherapist in 1992.

After giving seminars to DHS departments across the Northwest of England I was asked by a group of doctors to be an after dinner speaker at their conference. I cannot say that they were true believers but they were interested in how the essential oils worked, after the conference I was invited to open a complementary clinic where a team of the doctor’s practices would send me patients. I remember my first client had multiple sclerosis; this is a progressive disease of the central nervous system. It is so long ago now that I cannot remember the exact blend that I made up but I do remember my client becoming relaxed and the pain being reduced so much so, that we saw each other every week for the next 2 years.

They were great days then, we were appreciated as therapist and were taken seriously. Today in the UK ‘aroma’ has become a very fashionable name where advertisers use it to sell anything from toilet rolls to cigars to room fresheners, great if you are in the retail market for making money but not if you feel the value of the oils has diminished slightly for profit.

This is why I became a teacher; I wanted to share the message of healing that happens when you work with essential oils. You will see from my main profile that I have continued to work hard towards this end. I am very lucky and feel honoured that the essential oils still work a magic for me and for many others.

Welcome to our group, I look forward to growing with you in your development with essential oils and aromatherapy.
